It has been a pleasure welcoming the children into Grayling 2 this half term. We’ve been enjoying getting to know each other and the children have already been throwing themselves into their learning. They should all feel very proud of themselves!

Here are a few things that we have been learning over the past couple of weeks:

Literacy

In literacy, we have been reading the book The Story Machine:

We have been learning all about nouns (people, place and things) and adjectives (words that give us more information about a noun). We’ve used this learning to retell the story independently as our first big literacy writing job. Some brilliant examples the children have thought of are:

a blue, shiny robot
a hairy, scary spider
a dark, dusty attic

The children have also enjoyed using Spooky Spellings to practise some of their Year 1 and 2 Common Exception Words. This is a great tool that can also be used at home on a computer or iPad:

Maths

In maths, we’ve been learning about place value for numbers up to 100. The children have been learning about tens and ones and have also been learning about less than and greater than.

Topic

In Topic, we have recapped our Year 1 learning on the continents and oceans and have developed our understanding of the world by looking at the location of the equator and the North and South Poles. We’ve started to look at Kenya and have been comparing this African country to the United Kingdom.

The children will be coming home with a reading book at the end of this week. We’ve been reviewing phonics so that each child comes home with a book that is matched to their levels so keep an eye out for a new book soon!
